Species Without Spaces / Espèces Sans Espaces proposes new forms of narratives of the coastal environment of French Normandie through the creation of an interspecies media ecosystem combining documentary work, speculative eco-fiction and artefacts. The project was initiated during a residency at the Laboratoire Modulaire, an artistic research lab dedicated to hosting critical practices of digital media. 

Species Without Spaces is an immersive documentary installation with a large scale projection of a film blending documentary footage and digitally modified landscapes. The work is inhabited by the multiple voices, human and non-human that negotiate coastal habitability. 

The film was realised in consultation with coastal environment researchers at the Centre for Marine Research CREC, and with the technical support of the Laboratoire Modulaire. The soundscape was realised with Nicolas Germain, and contains sound artefacts recorded with geophones on the intertidal zone. 

The project was supported by Normandie Impressionniste and the Normandie Region as part of the festival ]interstice[18, which theme in 2024 was: “Landscapes Against Nature”. This festival promotes situated and critical approaches to digital arts and experimental creation that is embodied by bold choices of experimental practices, innovative research themes and a sustainable policy of production and support for creation and artists.
