Muybridge, Filtered is a limited edition photographic collage series realised as part of the Haunted Ecologies project exhibited at the Stanley Picker Gallery.
During his fellowship at SPG, Thomas Pausz studied the Muybridge Archive“s collection of original prints and glass plates from the pioneer photographer. Before realising his famous animal motion studies, Eadweard Muybridge worked as a landscape photographer, with a particular focus on rivers. His images of river landscapes and waterfalls participated in the emergence of nature tourism, and in the mythologising of the Californian landscape. In her book River of Shadows Rebecca Solnit details how Muybridge often superimposed separate images of clouds onto his photographs, creating composite images to achieve more dramatic visual effects.
Pausz realised a series of collages using coloured photographic filters, choosing specific colours that correspond to the colours of water pollution tests realised to assess the health of rivers. These collages were exhibited alongside original Muybridge prints at the Stanley Picker Gallery.
