Shellreader is the 2nd chapter of the Species Without Spaces series of eco-fictions about the intertidal zone, realised while in residency at the Laboratoire Modulaire and supported by funding from the Normandie region. Based on expeditions and fieldwork in coastal ecosystems, the Species Without Spaces series of works explores the moving boundaries between artificiality and natural processes in the coastal landscapes of the Anthropocene.

In Shellreader,  key texts of political ecology are encoded in seashells patterns using algorithmic encryption. The Shellreader installation is a fictional interface reading the algorithmic patterns of these shell-texts back into text.

The project is inspired by processes of cryptography and by sclerochronology, the scientific analysis of shell rings, in which climate data is embedded.
